Baker, Montana - The Friendly City by the Lake
Getting here is easy!
Baker sits at the crossroads of Montana State Highways 12 and 7.
Take Exit 141 off I-94 by Miles City to travel east on Highway 12 or come in
from the north by leaving I-94 at Exit 242 at Wibaux, Montana. Baker can also be
reached by flying into our modern airport.
Baker Lake!
Boating, swimming, water skiing and picnics are just a few of the summertime activities along the
shores of Baker Lake. Do you like to fish? The lake is well stocked with
pike, crappie, walleye and perch.
Free Camping!
Overnight facilities are available at the RV campground and the Steve McClain Memorial Park. Complete with bathrooms,
barbeques, picnic tables and sewage disposals, these campgrounds have it all. Coming by car and need a place to
stay? Baker has a variety of fine, reasonably-priced motels and restaurants.
Need to pick up something? Our local merchants enjoy visiting while extending
to you real hometown service. If you should find yourself in need of medical services,
Baker's Fallon Medical Complex has staff always available.
Scenic Wonders!
Drive 25 miles south to Medicine Rocks State Park. You'll marvel just as it's said
President Teddy Roosevelt did at these gnarled sandstone formations which time,
wind and water have carved into works of art.
Watch for Wildlife!
Deer, antelope and pheasant abound while rare glimpses can be had of elk and big-horn sheep
as you travel through the red-scorio pine-covered hills between Baker and
Miles City.
Land of Dinosaurs.
You don't have to dig deep to discover the past. The rugged outcrops
of weathered rock, feature some of the best dinosaur fossil hunting enthusiasts can
hope for.
Sports!
Baker is home of the Class B 2003 & 2004 State Champion Football Team. We are the feared "Beast from the East"!
But we also feature many other sports. Visit our public golf course with its modern
and pleasant Lakeview Country Club.
Or play baseball, volleyball or horseshoes.
Not the physical type? Baker offers quiet parks for your
pleasure. Retirees might enjoy visiting Baker's seniors at the Senior Citizen Center where
one can always find a friendly game of cards.
Hunters will appreciate the careful management of wild game populations. Not only do many hunters
fill their tags, but a few even bag that illusive trophy as well. In addition
to big game, the area is surrounded by game birds primarily pheasants and
wild turkey.
Snow and cold weather herald the season of winter sports. Ice
skate in the well-lit outdoor rink, snowmobile across the frozen lake, or cross-
country ski. Hardy fishermen can auger holes for their lines either at the Lake
or at one of the many resevoirs such as South Sandstone a few miles southwest of Baker.
Indoor Recreation!
Baker has one of the finest
indoor recreation complexes in the state. Located next to the Baker High School, it is
open year-round for public use. Enjoy the Olympic-sized indoor pool or test
your skills in the handball/racquetball or wallball courts. If you need a place to
walk during the cold months, the upper area is marked off for laps. Weight lifters will
enjoy the well-equipped weight room.
Historical Interest?
Baker may not lay claim to some famous outlaw but the past is very
much visible. Just north of town on the Wibaux road can be seen the tracks
of the Fort Keogh - Fort Abraham Lincoln road (present day Mile City and Mandan,
North Dakota). North and slightly east of Plevna is the grave of a lonely, unfortunate
mail carrier who lost his life in an encounter with Native Americans. More
recent history dots the landscape in the form of abandoned homeseteads and
towns -- Westmore and Carlyle to name two -- which give witness to a bygone era.
